Model MPT Melt Pressure Transducer or Transmitter (MPT)
Derived from the MPT sensor, the MPT is designed to measure both pressure and temperature of high-temperature melt media (up to 400 °C). It utilizes a metal foil strain gauge (MfSG) from BCM SENSOR as its sensing element, with its wetted components and housing constructed from stainless steel (SS) to meet the demands of high-temperature pressure media and harsh operating conditions. Consequently, MPT-series sensors are widely applied in injection moulding machines and extruders to monitor or measure the pressure and temperature of molten working media.
In contrast to the MPT, the MPT features an additional integrated temperature sensor—either a thermocouple or Pt100—whose electrical interface is situated adjacent to the pressure measurement electrical interface, enabling precise temperature measurement of the melt medium.
At the front end of the rigid stem, there is an SS isolation diaphragm that directly comes into contact with the melt pressure medium during operation. To guard against mechanical scratches, the isolation diaphragm is coated with a specially formulated alloy. Inside the rigid stem, a capillary filled with a non-toxic liquid-metal alloy (free of mercury) efficiently transmits the medium pressure from the isolation diaphragm to an SS pressure diaphragm located at the rear end of the stem. A full-bridge MfSG is mounted on the backside of this pressure diaphragm, converting the pressure-induced deformation of the diaphragm into a millivolt electrical signal.
To cater to various application needs, MPT sensors provide multiple output signal options for pressure measurement. The standard pressure output signals include 3.33mV/V (for models without a sensor signal conditioner (SSC)) or 4~20mA, 0~5V, or 0~10V (for models integrated with an SSC). By incorporating other types of SSCs, additional output signals can be supported, such as 4~20mA with HART protocol, CAN-bus, or Modbus protocol. The temperature measurement output signal is determined by the selected temperature sensor type, which may be a J-, K-, or E-type thermocouple, or a Pt100 thermal resistor.
For ease of on-site calibration, MPT sensors are equipped with an internal 80% full-scale (FS) shunt calibration function. This function allows for calibration at any time without the need for pressure-based calibration procedures. Upon request, the MPT can also be integrated with a relay for control applications.
